Clotrimazole is an antifungal agent intended for topical application.
Clotrimazole has a wide range of pharmacological effects - antibacterial, antiprotozoal, trichomonacid, antifungal.
Clotrimazole disrupts the synthesis of ergosterol (the main structural component of the cell membrane of fungi), changes the permeability of the fungal membrane, promotes exit from the cell potassium, intracellular phosphorus compounds and the breakdown of cellular nucleic acids.
Depending on the concentration, Clotrimazole has a fungicidal or fungistatic action.
Clotrimazole is effective against gram-positive bacteria - the causative agent of erythrasma Corynebacterium minutissimum, Staphylococcus spp., Streptococcus spp.
Clotrimazole is also effective against gram-negative bacteria - Bacteroides, Gardnerella vaginalis. In high concentrations, Clotrimazole is active against Trichomonas.
